Translation and transcription as a career, at least for a freelancer on the internet, is not something you want to do unless you have the right tools. What this article intends to do is tell you what you tools you need, what you need to learn and where to find translation and transcription jobs after you acquire the required skills.

A small confession before I start - The reason I'm writing this article is not because I did some deep introspection - It's because I didn't have any material for this post.

There are two very important things about this page:
A:- It has a priceless collection of articles from writers about how they ended up as writers.
B:- It's free and from the NYTimes. How often does that happen?

While each of you ( I'm taking it for granted here that you are some kind of a writer ), will draw his own conclusions from the bunch of articles inside, a couple of them really hit close to home for me. So, I decided to rehash some old history.

I can't hold a regular morning-to-evening job. I tried, for all of three days, before I decided that I really wasn't made for this. I have this deep restlessness inside, and it rears it's ugly head whenever I get somewhat comfortable in any situation. So I decided to earn enough money to be able to retire and then do whatever my heart desired. Needless to say, it didn't quite work out that way. Which is when I decided to take a step back and take some time off. I spent a few months basically lazing and moping around, during which time it occured to me that I might try to do some writing. Well, to make a long story short, I'm no good at it. But I found one thing - You don't have to be Charles Dickens to sell an article on the web. And that's what I'm doing currently.

Well, that solves a couple of problems:
1. I didn't know what to write about today.
2. After reading those articles in the NYT, I have come to the conclusion that all writers are, in some way or the other, abysmal failures in the normal pursuits of life. So, let's pack up all that guilt and stow it away, to be opened for introspection some other time. For now, I'm a writer.

SEO Copywriting

Spotlight on Copy Writers. A few facts about copywriting before we go on to today's writing gigs:

"Copywriters are similar to technical writers, and the careers may overlap. Broadly speaking, however, technical writing is dedicated to informing readers rather than persuading them. A copywriter would write an ad designed to sell you a car, while a technical writer would write the operator's manual designed to tell you how to use it."

To confuse you some more, I'll sprinkle in copywriting for the web. What this means is that:
1. You need to write an ad targeting human visitors, extolling the virtues of the product or service.
2. You need to keep in mind that your text is meant to be keyword rich and make the page / ad rank higher in the search engines.

This is what we would call SEO copywriting. And this is the kind of job you can find easily. Why? Because you're providing a service which sells a product to both humans and search engine bots. Advertisers and/or publishers should be swamping you with offers, if you can hire yourself to write some good SEO Copywriting for yourself....Ok, this is getting wierd. Let's get down to the jobs before I mess up this post:

My point is it's all about love. You can fight and kill and hate and plunder, but ultimately the sun will dawn. The ashes of war will bring about a strong foundation for love and peace and unity. You can say that's naive. But it also happens to be true. You can't put out the fires raging in Iraq without hosing them over with love and friendship and peace and prosperity. So take all those military strategies and flush them down the loo. When you're done doing that, try uncorking some love, same as you see in the picture. Maybe, just maybe, you could win...

Wanted - Web Content Writers - Dead or Alive

In years gone by, before there was corporate hegemony and while there was still value for an individual's sweat, there used to periodic gold rushes. Meaning that someone, a lone prospector, would strike gold and become stinking rich. His story would spread far and wide and people from all over would turn up in and around the area to try and get a share of the pie. Merchants would set up shops and motels and whore houses just to provide service to these prospectors. In short order, there would be a bustling town living off the money which these prospecters brought in. This is what was known as a gold rush.

My point with all this blather is that we're going through a similar period on the internet. People are staking claims to ideas, domain names and topics by any means. Locking up all these and getting search engine traffic, the online equivalent of gold, is the key to open the door to a flood of internet gold. But search engine traffic needs content, a lot of content.

Which is where we writers come in - And we're wanted today in all shapes and sizes.. So long as you can deliver results, i.e. web content - Nothing else counts. You don't have to prove that you have a Ph.D in the required topic to write an article on it. You don't need to go to the local library to borrow a find a book and sit up all night poring over some mundane theory written a long time ago by some dead guy about which you have no freaking clue. It's fast, it's easy, it's hot and in demand and does not need you to go to college or a university and spend a couple of years of your life. So what's the catch? Plagiarism.

When you have people writing articles about topics which they are totally unfamiliar with, there's a big chance that these amateur writers will take shortcuts and quote without attribution. Now, it's almost impossible in today's internet to catch a digital copyright violation, unless you spend a lot of money to safeguard and keep track of your content via search engines. So what happens is that most of the time, this plagiarism goes unnoticed. Here's my advice to all web content writers - Before you start writing an article, spend at least one full day researching a topic if you don't know much about it. Once you understand a topic properly - The concepts, the industry terms, the people, the rules and laws and history of the sector - Then you start writing about it. After you finish writing, check your article from top to bottom and delete/rewrite any sentence or paragraph which you feel should not be there.

Now, an established writer, who's basically an expert in his field of expertise may have a sarcastic smirk if he reads this article for wannabe web content writers. But lemme tell you pal - Your days are numbered. Today's the time of the amateur writer - Who's an expert on any topic his employer wants him to write about. And it can and is being done. Just do it properly, ethically and without causing harm to yourself, your employer and your employer's clients.

Maybe this is just a case of sour grapes, but I am really pissed. Financially speaking, it's peanuts. But rejection always hurts, specially when you think it's not deserved. I fired an email back to them asking that my account be terminated immediately. But in typical blockhead mentality, there's no frigging reply to that....Go figure. Which is why I feel like I do when I see a message from his Holiness Bill Friggin Gates : Keyboard Error - Press F1 To Continue.

This is not to say that I'm stupid and don't understand their reasoning. They figure it's a new blog and won't be giving their advertisers the value for money promised. Well, they're wrong. Cause after a few months, they're gonna regret nixing this blog. Ok. Rant over.

Blogging Gigs

Uh...Ok, well maybe the title was just meant to pull you in, but, hey, that's what we call a "smart ad'. You know, this paid blogging thing is causing a bit of confusion. I have absolutely no problems with the ethical part of it. We're all grownups, and when you see a post, you're smart enough to judge if it's a shameless plug or a real "from-the-heart" post.

My concern is that paid blogging is going to create a vast bubble with a huge influx of part time bloggers, which will make it seem to advertisers like there's a huge influx in blog readers and they'll start pumping in money. At the end of the day, when the whole thing gets flushed down the loo, the advertisers will give every blog, good or bad, a goodbye kiss.

Here's a bastardized description of monetization from Wikipedia:

"Even intrinsically worthless items can be made into money, as long as they are difficult to make or acquire. Monetization may also refer.........to charging for something that used to be free or making money on a goods and services that were previously unprofitable."

Data Entry Gig

Got something which is increasingly becoming a rarity - A data entry gig.

Need to mention here that if you try to search or find some more data entry jobs, specially via the the internet, what you'll end up with is a little less money in your wallet, the reason being that 99.99% of all companies offering to give and/or find you a data entry gig will charge you an upfront fee of between 20-100$ and in the end what you get is most likely a stale list of companies which you could have got on the net for free......

Point being that if you're looking for jobs on the net:
1. Never, ever pay for something which seems fishy.
2. Learn to discern what's genuine and what's a scam.

Note: What happens is, this is really a small business sector. Meaning that most of these companies are run by a single person. They may not be always advertising that they need people, but if you contact them, be nice and polite and make a positive impression, the employer may feel that you might be an asset and may give you a chance.
