Practical lesson in Standup Comedy

Let's get down to business:
"Two Sisters Reunited After 18 Years in Checkout Line" Why is that funny? Uh...Never mind. I think I need to start a seperate jokes blog..

1. BBC - Getting Started in Comedy - Comedy is notoriously difficult to quantify, and even the most successful comedians and comedy writers would struggle to explain why a joke is funny. But there are tips to take note of and pitfalls to avoid, as Martin Trenaman and Matt Leys explain.

2. Joke Writing Resource Centre - A brief look at how jokes are written, recommended books with reviews, writing for greetings cards, successful lyric writing book and software programs to help you write and drawing cartoons.

3. 7 Ways to Improve Your Joke Writing - You can learn and improve upon your joke and humor writing skills, regardless of genre. As Mills adds, "Every joke is a story with a beginning, a middle and an end."

4. How to Write a Joke: The 7 basic joke forms - Structurally speaking, joke writing problems are exactly the same for anyone trying to get a laugh.

I think I wanna do a sequel for this post...

Writing jokes for money - Part 1

A few years back, I was a nerd sitting in my mom's basement chatting online with other nerds sitting in their respective basements. I was told to get a life and a real job. The reason I mention this at all, is because it just struck me how attitudes have changed towards people who make their living online. Even people who have very little or no interaction on the net now think it's pretty cool when I tell them that my computer feeds me.

Course there's a relative aspect to all this - Compared to a Google employee who works from home, I'm trailer trash. Anyway, what I'm trying to say here is that it is no longer a risk to base one's career on trying to earn money online. Hold on, hold on...Don't quit the day job just yet. I didn't mean it literally. Just a manner of speaking...

On to something a bit more specific and related to freelance writers:

Duh! One would think that Google is bound to know the answer as to whether a blog can make money or not. Well, think again:
Q: Blogging for revenue ( No Answer, 3 Comments )

Just one more crack. I promise. Then we get on to the jobs. Sorry, I can't get you a job freelancing

Ok. On to the jobs:- Today's niche focus - Writing jokes for money. Here's a list of resources, available gigs and of course, the jokes ( C'mon...How do you expect me to write about making money from jokes, if you don't wanna listen to the jokes? ).

Hold on to your hats for part II.

Which brings me to this ( Warning : This has nothing to do with telecommute jobs or freelance writers... ):

Third World Workers Need Western Jobs
I'll quote the paragraph which makes me want to puke, if preferably onto the above author's face:
"The issue of child labor has long been a flashpoint in the globalization debate. As repellant as the notion of child labor is, the harsh truth is that a Western company that stops using child labor in some Third World nations does not change the economic conditions that had those children working in the first place. Nor does it change the local cultural standards that accept and expect child labor. Unfortunately, in many corners of the globe, closing the factories and sweatshops to children often just seals for them a far worse fate."

The State Of the Worlds Children

How low can someone fall in order to justify some preconcieved notions? I'm not going to argue about this point by point or provide links to prove him wrong because it's not necessary. All I want to say is that if something you do is right and truthful, you never, ever have to be ashamed of doing it. Is there a single - Just name me one - company which says that "Yes, we do employ child labor, and what we're doing is right"? You won't find one. I wish someone would wake up the klutz who wrote that article and ask him to take a good look in the mirror.

Freelance Jobs - 9th Nov 2006

You know, when I started blogging, I had it all planned out. I divided my work into two categories - Short term and Long term. Short term where I get paid for some small stuff, like short articles or reviews or blogging or whatever. Pay ain't something to brag about, but it keeps the wheels turning. And Long term is like where you have to put in a lot of time and effort, without seeing any immediate returns, but lots of castles in the air. Meaning that I was doing both, the short term work keeping me motivated and the long term work giving me hope that one day....Anyway, what I'm saying is that I'm in way over my nose. I have a sore throat, the short term work is piling up and the long term projects just keep getting bigger and bigger. Plus, the Democrats took the Republicans to the woodshed in the US congressional elections, Novell throws Linux users to the big bad shark, uhh...Microsoft and Britney Spears files for divorce. WTF is going on?? Show me some love, huh?

Copy and Write This

Copywriting

Nice pic, huh? If you're in the Netherlands and want some copywriting done, pls click pic to visit 'Kant copywrite' or somethin like that.

Anyway, a coupla days back I wrote about SEO copywriting. Wish I had read the following page before writing that article:

PerceptionEngine.com

If I had bumped into this page a few days back, I wouldn't have had to write about copywriting. I would just have needed to copy and write.

I'm quoting two full paragraphs for those who don't want to read the full article:

"What are the Benefits of Writing an Article for Your Site?

I send you a free toaster in the mail. Nope, just kidding. When you submit an article to PerceptionEngine, you maintain sole ownership of your literary work. You are merely giving me permission to publish it on my website. This means that you can publish your article elsewhere on other websites while it's published on mine, and you can have your article removed from my website at any time for any reason. I'm not a thief, your intellectual property will not be stolen.

In addition, you get free publishing (I put it up on my site), free maintenance (I pay for hosting), and free advertising (I show visitors where it is). You can also advertise your own website in your author's profile. I regularly utilize search engines to ensure that your material is not plagiarised or reproduced without your consent, so I will help to protect your work."

What strikes you after reading that? I'll tell you what didn't strike me - The pain that normally comes after reading a full page and finding out that the cheapskate wants your article for free.

All he's saying is that you get a byline, same as every website which does not pay writers. But he's saying it in such a way that it takes away the pain and the urge to close the window. Makes you pause for a second. God knows how many writers have decided to submit their articles in that brief pause. This is not writing. This is Copywriting.

Again, if you're lookin for today's jobs, that'll be coming in a short while in another post. HA!

Get ready for some bloviating by yours truly in a few hours. But before that, I gotta do some work, for a change, like writing an article. Deadline is coming closer and I'm starting to sweat a bit. Just a tiny little bit. Nothing I can't handle. I hope...

Ghost Writers

I am, in effect a ghost writer because I sell articles for money, rather than name. I'd like not to be a ghost. I'd like to be a full warm blooded human writer with both money and name, but the evil publishers have banned me to the realm of the hooded writers who recieve only the money and someone else gets the credit.

It burns my heart when I see my articles credited to some nobody, but if I start taking credit for the work, it is my stomach that will be growling. I'd rather let my heart burn than let my stomach growl.

Hillary Clinton

Source: http://www.happinessonline.org/LoveAndHelpChildren/p12.htm ( That leads to an alleged speech about the allegedly ghost written book by Queen Hillary about how the entire village raised Chelsea. )

Ghost writers come in a few mutant varieties:
1. Writers who get partial credit ( say somewhere in small print, at the bottom, where no one can read it.) This would be the kind of gig where you write an autobiography of a celeb or politician who hasn't read or written anything for the last decade or so.
2. Writers who really do not exist. Meaning the publishing house invents a writer and gives the writer credit for the collective work of a lot of writers.
3. Writers who get no credit whatsoever and are compensated purely in terms of money. This would be the kind of category where myself and other, uh..undernourished artists fall.

Since I'm making a living out of this practise, it would be foolish of me to nitpick about there being an element of deception in ghost writing. Does it hurt anyone? Well...Think about it. I write an article on credit scores or debt management. I do a lot of research and finetune the article so that it really looks like I know what I, meaning the author, Not me..uh, anyway...is talking about. End result? Any visitor to the site where the article now resides is going to be impressed and will be more than willing to pay a few bucks to hire the site owner's services.

My point - Ghost writing for web content is a wholly different ball game than ghost writing a book. Can I live with this deception? Of course. Can I sleep at night? Of course. So don't I look like a hypocrite now after making this post? Yes. Should I have written this post? Nope.

If you're looking for the jobs, you'll have to wait some more. I decided I need to make two posts a day. I'm splittin the jobs and my blather into two seperate posts. So now you know which one you want to read. Right?

Freelancers and Freelancing

Pipe down! We'll get down to today's freelancing jobs very soon. Besides Craigslist ain't going nowhere. I want to expound ( or is that bloviate? ) on freelancers and freelancing a little bit first.

Online Job Hunt

A freelancer is, by definition, a dolt who finishes one job and then goes around searching for another job. Or something like that. My point is, besides being good at the job itself, a freelancer needs to be highly skilled at hunting down jobs. A normal person would hunt for a new job maybe once or twice in a decade wheras a freelancer has to do it everyday. In short, hunting for jobs is part of the job. Uh....I don't know how I ended up with that, and you can stop grinning now.

As a freelance writer, I really like the challenge of trying to find a gig and when someone accepts my services, it gives a sense of achievement. But the fun really begins when it comes down to writing the article. I mean, you have no friggin clue about the topic you have been asked to write about. You start Googling and pretty soon a routine assignment turns into a fascinating process of discovery. You learn things you never would have in any other sector. I have done research on and written articles about topics as varied as Moore's law on semiconducters, a HowTo on Backgammon, Medicare woes in the US and other equally interesting topics. This is an aspect of being a freelance writer which I love the most.

Job satisfaction is a word bandied about by HR Managers everywhere. But what exactly does it mean? For me, it means looking forward eagerly to see what today has in store for you. Am I going to write about Art Nouveau or am I going to write an essay about the feeding habits of pet rabbits? Or am I going to bloviate about freelancing on my blog? Either way, I enjoy it all. Question is: Do you?

Translation and Transcription Jobs

Translation and transcription as a career, at least for a freelancer on the internet, is not something you want to do unless you have the right tools. What this article intends to do is tell you what you tools you need, what you need to learn and where to find translation and transcription jobs after you acquire the required skills.

first up, you probably wandered in here looking for a transcription or translation job. If so, here's the transcription jobs and here's the translation jobs.

However, if you're just starting out, you should probably read on first.

Medical Transcription Jobs

Now this is a totally different issue and I would not advise you to apply unless you have a medical background - And that doesn't mean you qualify if you managed to coax out a couple of your dentist's front teeth while he was trying to pull out yours.
Video

This is serious stuff and you have the lives of patients in your hands. If you still think you're up to it, please follow the links below:

jobs.biohealthmatics.com
www.mtjobs.com

There's a big list of companies like the two above. You can find them here.

Ok. In case you're still reading, and you think this scene ain't bad - Got a lotta jobs and pay's good. Hmmm...Only problem is, you don't know squat about medical transcription. So?

Click here. It would be impossible for me to compete with that FAQ. Read it. Follow it. Don't start spending any money just yet. Just read and learn. Then come back here and read the rest of this post.

Ok. Now that you're back ( you didn't really read it, did you? I know - It's too big. ). Here's how you can get a hands-on feel of the work involved, without spending a dime. And if you're good at it, you might even end up with a nice medical transcription gig.

Tigerfish Medical Transcription

Note: I have come up with these links after spending a lot of painful hours searching and contacting dozens of companies and rejecting every company which asked for money. In spite of this, if you are dense enough to end up paying someone to get a medical transcription job, then you really deserve to be parted of your money.

Because they're making you jump through hoops( you'll understand if you try fill in the form). Dunno why, but it rings some alarm bells. A company which wanted to pay to write articles would just tell you to send over an email with your resume/details. Anyway, I could be wrong, and this could be a great job, in which case I'm gonna miss out, cause I left the form halfway through.

Attorneys wanted for telecommuting writing job - Click Here

Comment: Get this gig and you probably won't have the time to go looking for another one for a long time.

Internet Teachers - Click Here
Comment: Uh...They need us to teach people how to use Google and Yahoo and web browsers - Via the internet..I'm still scratching my head.....I mean, how do you teach someone to use the internet when you're communicating via the internet????
There's 3 possibilities here:
1. Either I'm dumb and missing something.
2. The employer is dumb and hasn't thought about this.
3. The people who are the employers clients are too dumb to have thought about this.

Take your pick, though I'm leaning towards No.1

Enjoy.

Staring Into The Abyss

A small confession before I start - The reason I'm writing this article is not because I did some deep introspection - It's because I didn't have any material for this post.

Writers Block
Since I'm hotlinking their image, you might consider visiting http://www.literaryagent.co.uk/

Anyway, I was looking for articles by other writers and just happened to bump into this page:

Writers On Writing

There are two very important things about this page:
A:- It has a priceless collection of articles from writers about how they ended up as writers.
B:- It's free and from the NYTimes. How often does that happen?

While each of you ( I'm taking it for granted here that you are some kind of a writer ), will draw his own conclusions from the bunch of articles inside, a couple of them really hit close to home for me. So, I decided to rehash some old history.

I can't hold a regular morning-to-evening job. I tried, for all of three days, before I decided that I really wasn't made for this. I have this deep restlessness inside, and it rears it's ugly head whenever I get somewhat comfortable in any situation. So I decided to earn enough money to be able to retire and then do whatever my heart desired. Needless to say, it didn't quite work out that way. Which is when I decided to take a step back and take some time off. I spent a few months basically lazing and moping around, during which time it occured to me that I might try to do some writing. Well, to make a long story short, I'm no good at it. But I found one thing - You don't have to be Charles Dickens to sell an article on the web. And that's what I'm doing currently.

Well, that solves a couple of problems:
1. I didn't know what to write about today.
2. After reading those articles in the NYT, I have come to the conclusion that all writers are, in some way or the other, abysmal failures in the normal pursuits of life. So, let's pack up all that guilt and stow it away, to be opened for introspection some other time. For now, I'm a writer.

SEO Copywriting

Spotlight on Copy Writers. A few facts about copywriting before we go on to today's writing gigs:

"Copywriters are similar to technical writers, and the careers may overlap. Broadly speaking, however, technical writing is dedicated to informing readers rather than persuading them. A copywriter would write an ad designed to sell you a car, while a technical writer would write the operator's manual designed to tell you how to use it."
- Wikipedia

To confuse you some more, I'll sprinkle in copywriting for the web. What this means is that:
1. You need to write an ad targeting human visitors, extolling the virtues of the product or service.
2. You need to keep in mind that your text is meant to be keyword rich and make the page / ad rank higher in the search engines.

This is what we would call SEO copywriting. And this is the kind of job you can find easily. Why? Because you're providing a service which sells a product to both humans and search engine bots. Advertisers and/or publishers should be swamping you with offers, if you can hire yourself to write some good SEO Copywriting for yourself....Ok, this is getting wierd. Let's get down to the jobs before I mess up this post:

Search jobs for SEO copywriters at Indeed.com

Timeout

Warning: This post has absolutely nothing to do with telecommute jobs, writers or in general any form, size or shape of visitor that I crave for and my sponsors crave for. So if you came here looking for some kind of job or something, feel free to wander about, search or rip apart any of the other posts on this site.

Take a good look:

You know what this picture says? It says - "TIMEOUT"
You know what the Iraq war needs? "TIMEOUT"
You know what you do when you get into a fight with someone you love? "TIMEOUT"

My point is it's all about love. You can fight and kill and hate and plunder, but ultimately the sun will dawn. The ashes of war will bring about a strong foundation for love and peace and unity. You can say that's naive. But it also happens to be true. You can't put out the fires raging in Iraq without hosing them over with love and friendship and peace and prosperity. So take all those military strategies and flush them down the loo. When you're done doing that, try uncorking some love, same as you see in the picture. Maybe, just maybe, you could win...

Wanted - Web Content Writers - Dead or Alive

In years gone by, before there was corporate hegemony and while there was still value for an individual's sweat, there used to periodic gold rushes. Meaning that someone, a lone prospector, would strike gold and become stinking rich. His story would spread far and wide and people from all over would turn up in and around the area to try and get a share of the pie. Merchants would set up shops and motels and whore houses just to provide service to these prospectors. In short order, there would be a bustling town living off the money which these prospecters brought in. This is what was known as a gold rush.

My point with all this blather is that we're going through a similar period on the internet. People are staking claims to ideas, domain names and topics by any means. Locking up all these and getting search engine traffic, the online equivalent of gold, is the key to open the door to a flood of internet gold. But search engine traffic needs content, a lot of content.

Which is where we writers come in - And we're wanted today in all shapes and sizes.. So long as you can deliver results, i.e. web content - Nothing else counts. You don't have to prove that you have a Ph.D in the required topic to write an article on it. You don't need to go to the local library to borrow a find a book and sit up all night poring over some mundane theory written a long time ago by some dead guy about which you have no freaking clue. It's fast, it's easy, it's hot and in demand and does not need you to go to college or a university and spend a couple of years of your life. So what's the catch? Plagiarism.

When you have people writing articles about topics which they are totally unfamiliar with, there's a big chance that these amateur writers will take shortcuts and quote without attribution. Now, it's almost impossible in today's internet to catch a digital copyright violation, unless you spend a lot of money to safeguard and keep track of your content via search engines. So what happens is that most of the time, this plagiarism goes unnoticed. Here's my advice to all web content writers - Before you start writing an article, spend at least one full day researching a topic if you don't know much about it. Once you understand a topic properly - The concepts, the industry terms, the people, the rules and laws and history of the sector - Then you start writing about it. After you finish writing, check your article from top to bottom and delete/rewrite any sentence or paragraph which you feel should not be there.

Now, an established writer, who's basically an expert in his field of expertise may have a sarcastic smirk if he reads this article for wannabe web content writers. But lemme tell you pal - Your days are numbered. Today's the time of the amateur writer - Who's an expert on any topic his employer wants him to write about. And it can and is being done. Just do it properly, ethically and without causing harm to yourself, your employer and your employer's clients.

Keyboard Error - Press F1 To continue

PayPerPost.com replied back to me saying that they're rejecting me because "My Blog Is Too Young". WTF???? I'm good enough for Google and Yahoo. I'm good enough for Performancing. I'm good enough for CommissionJunction. I'm good enough for sites which are "Not So Young" in my line of work - Telecommuting. I'm good enough for Technocrati and a multitude of Blog directories, sponsors and other people who find this blog interesting, are linking back to it. But I'm "too young" for PayperPost.com

Maybe this is just a case of sour grapes, but I am really pissed. Financially speaking, it's peanuts. But rejection always hurts, specially when you think it's not deserved. I fired an email back to them asking that my account be terminated immediately. But in typical blockhead mentality, there's no frigging reply to that....Go figure. Which is why I feel like I do when I see a message from his Holiness Bill Friggin Gates : Keyboard Error - Press F1 To Continue.

This is not to say that I'm stupid and don't understand their reasoning. They figure it's a new blog and won't be giving their advertisers the value for money promised. Well, they're wrong. Cause after a few months, they're gonna regret nixing this blog. Ok. Rant over.

Uh...Ok, well maybe the title was just meant to pull you in, but, hey, that's what we call a "smart ad'. You know, this paid blogging thing is causing a bit of confusion. I have absolutely no problems with the ethical part of it. We're all grownups, and when you see a post, you're smart enough to judge if it's a shameless plug or a real "from-the-heart" post.

My concern is that paid blogging is going to create a vast bubble with a huge influx of part time bloggers, which will make it seem to advertisers like there's a huge influx in blog readers and they'll start pumping in money. At the end of the day, when the whole thing gets flushed down the loo, the advertisers will give every blog, good or bad, a goodbye kiss.

Here's a bastardized description of monetization from Wikipedia:

"Even intrinsically worthless items can be made into money, as long as they are difficult to make or acquire. Monetization may also refer.........to charging for something that used to be free or making money on a goods and services that were previously unprofitable."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monetization

Duh. They might as well change Monetization to "Paid Blogging" and the definition would still be accurate....

Since you got this far, you might as well go through the listings:

Comment: I'm not really sure this last one is telecommute, but it says part time, so I guess there's no harm in giving it a shot. Though what the company does may give you pause to think if you really, really want the job.....I mean, they most likely will conduct a background check on you, and if you have any skeletons rattling around in the old closet, maybe you should give it a pass.

Finally, as a reward for reaching this far down here's today's freebie:

A search engine with a difference - The search results are given out by humans who are waiting for user search queries. And these human search bots get paid for it. ( US only )

Data Entry Gig

Got something which is increasingly becoming a rarity - A data entry gig.

Need to mention here that if you try to search or find some more data entry jobs, specially via the the internet, what you'll end up with is a little less money in your wallet, the reason being that 99.99% of all companies offering to give and/or find you a data entry gig will charge you an upfront fee of between 20-100$ and in the end what you get is most likely a stale list of companies which you could have got on the net for free......

Point being that if you're looking for jobs on the net:
1. Never, ever pay for something which seems fishy.
2. Learn to discern what's genuine and what's a scam.

Comment: Sorry, but I just can't let that one go by - An earth shattering career change in Washington, D.C., today, means only one thing - Going from the Capitol to a jail cell. Got a lot of exhibits for that including Reps. Duke Cunningham, Ney, Jefferson, Foley and a whole lot more coming soon. You're going to be kept quite busy trying to get this lot rehabilitated. So fire up that ol resume and apply for the job.

Oh yeah, for those who managed to suffer through all my blather and reach the end of this post, here's a 100$ reward.
